To O'Reilly's Mountain Rainforest Escape in Lamington NP

Up early again, a quick muffin & juice for breakfast, and a shuttle ride to the international airport about 6:30am to meet our birding group from the US. Bill Turner, Nature Downunder, from Centennial, CO is our group leader. Dave and I have gone on a guided bird trip with him in Costa Rica in 2010. We met the crew about 7:40 and by 9:30 we were birding at a park. We had Red-necked and Pretty Face Wallaby at this first stop. We made two more birding stops before arriving at O'Reilly's Rainforest Resort for lunch. After lunch we did a bird walk with Bill. Highlights included Satin Bowerbird, Regent Bowerbird, Crimson Rosella, King Parrot, Eastern Spinebill, and Red-browed Finch. O'Reilly's seems to be the Australian equivalent of Jorge's Magic Birding Circuit in Ecuador. So many unusual and colorful birds to see! Counting all the stops we had around fifty-four species today.

We birded with an O'Reilly guide before breakfast, all morning after breakfast and all afternoon.....from 6:45am to 6pm...we birded until we dropped! Favorites were: Albert's Lyrebird (no photo), Rufous Fantail (no photo), Grey Goshawk (no photo), Variegated Fairy-wren (no photo). We loved the scenery when we got out of the rainforest, gazing at mountains in the distance. The skies were smoky however, due to the fires west of Sydney, several hundred miles to the south.

Dave had to have a tick removed from his neck this evening. Ewwww!

A great day otherwise.
