The first of the fall color.

The view from partway up the gondola.

The peak of Whiteface Mountain where most of the ski trails start.

More fall color in the town of Lake Placid.

We left the shore yesterday and headed through the Adirondacks to a KOA near Lake Placid. We saw quite a few trees that are on the verge of turning, and the drive was hilly and twisty. It really isn't that far from our last stop but took quite a while. The campground is very pretty with lots of trees but no grass, apparently because of the shade, so the ground is too dusty for the cats to get out. They weren't happy.

Today we stopped at Whiteface Mountain ski area which was host of the 1932 and 1980 winter olympics. The ski mountain is impressive but nothing like the big areas in Colorado. We rode the gondola to the top of Little Whiteface. It was pretty breezy and hazy (they say it's going to rain tonight) and we couldn't see clearly, but it was still pretty anyway.

The town of Lake Placid itself is small with narrow, twisty streets. I can't imagine how the thousands of participants, let alone spectators, managed to cram themselves in. We had lunch in town and browsed a bit in the shops, but the weather was turning cooler and windy so we headed "home."
