View From Campground In Linwood

We all took a leisurely approach to today, as we had decided the night before to opt for a shorter and easier ride so that we would be rested for the following day's expected 160+ km ride into North Sydney. I awoke at 5:15 am, had breakfast, and set off at just before 7:00 am.

The recommended route had us continuing along Highway 245 to Malignant Cove, then taking Highway 337 past Cape George Point and Ballantyne's Cove into Antigonish. From there we were to take Highway 104, then Old Highway 4 past Afton, Tracadie and Monastery into Linwood, where we were to spend the night at the Hyclass Ocean Campground.

The shorter route had us bypass Highway 337 and instead continue on Highway 245 into Antigonish. Highway 337 is said to have spectacular views, but it is hilly and would have added 33 km to the ride. Still, it is something that I would like to see one day, possibly when my wife and I return to Nova Scotia in two weeks' time.

The ride was one of the most pleasant thus far. We continued to be treated to lovely weather, the roads were good (though often without a shoulder), and traffic was light. The lack of pressure to cover large distances also added to the relaxed ride today.

I arrived in Antigonish at about 8:30 am and rode around the town for a few minutes, finally deciding that I was enjoying the ride too much to stop there. I eventually stopped in Monastery for a coffee and cinnamon bun, then continued on to the campground, arriving at about 10:30 am.

The truck arrived a few minutes later bringing news. Marine Atlantic is restoring the ferry service between North Sydney and Argentia, so there will be no need to go to Port-aux-Basques after all. We are therefore returning to the original plan, riding to Englishtown, then to North Sydney, where we will take the overnight ferry to Argentia, then into St. John's.

Dinner tonight was white bean and ham hocks soup, couscous and chicken in Shane's special sauce, with strawberries on shortcake for dessert.
