Charters Towers campsite

Huge Mango tree

Not far along the way to Charters Towers we clocked over 3000klms for this trip. We passed through small townships of Prairie, Torrens Creek, Pentland and Homestead. Most of these places seemed to be little more than a hotel and a couple of isolated houses. Along the way we crossed over many dry creek beds. Some of these were very wide creek beds and at times had been in flood, but now there was not a drop of water in them. The countryside is just so dry and brown. A pleasant surprise was a sign advertising fresh vegetables, and we soon found 3 gentlemen who had a stall with fresh veges and fruit all packed in big white styrofoam boxes with the lids secured by a large rock. You just had to lift the rock, then the lid to see what they had for sale. We did get some nice fresh veges and a beautiful sweet pineapple.

Arrived at Charters Towers in time to set up for lunch. We were given a site alongside a huge mango tree. Travelled 252 klms today.

We went into town and found our first Woolworths for a couple of weeks. As our next caravan park is 30klms from shops we stocked up.

The local scouts were putting on a meal at the caravan park tonight, so we went along. Not a good idea for the food, but we did have a good time chatting to a couple who run a caravan park in Sussex Inlet and another couple from the Sunshine Coast who have been travelling around the country for a couple of years.
