Heading south we started more relaxing and slightly less touring having 2 nights on the coast and we mean the waters edge at Rollngstone about 50ks north of Townsville. That gave us a day and a half to relax and unwind. Then off to Charters Towers on the way meeting up with friends Trev and Ros and starting inland towards the outback. Charters Towers is an old gold mining town and we did an interesting tour via a Tourist Information CD that was basically a talking guide CD, turned on and off as indicated and it told the local story as we were parked outside the item, a great concept and we really enjoyed the information.
Then more westward to Hughenden 250kms away with nothing apart from rest bays on the way. Population of 1200 so only a small town with basic services. It’s part of the area where the locals have been finding lots of fossils of marine animals between 100 and 110 million years old. We went another 100kms westward to Richmond to see a good fossil display having smoko and lunch on the way and there.
The next day we took a run up to Porcupine Gorge and interesting gorge to see and a great place to have a bit of an indulging smoko something to our waists delight we try and avoid. This area is interesting as it is flat, very flat so any hillock gives you a great view, so here at Hughenden its been a lot of fun. We saw a herd of camels as well as two Brolgas.
Today Sunday it’s off to Winton the birthplace óf our airline Qantas and where it is rumoured the place where Waltzing Matilda was written and 1st performed.
So for now that’s all folks.
