Weaver's South East Asia Trip travel blog

Up early. After breakfast we walked around the village. The house beside us is preparing for a wedding. We heard them up late preparing food. This morning they were setting up tables. It was a short drive to Vang Vieng. This village is set against a backdrop of dramatic limestone mountains along a bend in the Nam Song river. The area around it is very picturesque, with lots of caves to explore. Our hotel is near the Nam Song river. Our room is on the 4th floor overlooking the river and Lao Mountains. You can see the sheer limestone cliffs. We walked to the Jang Cave and climbed 147 steps to get inside. Lots of stalactites. From one of the caves we could look out and see the Nam Song river and Vang Vieng laid out before us. After lunch, we drifted down the Nam Song Rive in tubes. It was so relaxing and the water wasn't too cold. We had a beer as we floated. Kayaks and motorized long boats would pass us. The river would get busy at times! By the end of our 2 1/2 hour float the sun began to go behind the trees making us cold. We had a wonderful dinner at another hotel right on the riverside. The patio had a fire pit near our table to help keep us warm.
