Trail to Dark Hollow Falls

The winners of yesterday's trivia questions: John and Joi were correct-- our first President was a graffiti artist. Amy picked Mick Jagger. I have not laughed that hard in a long time. Kudos to Skeeter and Jan for "Little Sorrel" as the name of Stonewall's horse. He is actually stuffed and mounted at VMI. But no Skeeter, he did not ride his horse to the Natural Bridge. You are probably thinking of Thomas Jefferson who actually owned the bridge for a while. We left this am at 9am under sunny skies and temp of 54. The weather was perfect all day. By 9:15 we were on the Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah National Park. We arrived at the Big Meadows visitor center at 11:30. Butch had the great idea to hike 1.5 miles to Dark Hollow Falls. All downhill to the falls and you guessed it. He missed the shuttle and the elevator was out of order. Elevation change was 900 feet which does not sound like much, but needless to say he arrived back at the visitor center pooped. Had a picnic at 2:25 at Big Meadows with temp 55 degrees. Marion's pimento cheese is so good. Thanks, Marion. Almost gone. Could you send more to Philadelphia? We should be there next Thursday. Naturalist at the visitor center gave a lecture on Monarch butterflies. Trivia question of the day: What plant is required for the Monarch's survival? This is a tough one. Exited the SLD to visit Luray Caverns which is a remarkable place. Lots of stalactites and stalacmites. Do you know which is which?. 1.5 miles of underground walkways up to 160 feet below the surface. Even an underground organ with rubber hammers striking the tites and mites. Didn't sound so great to us. Needs a little tuning. Would show you pictures, but alas the camera battery died. Maybe next time. Returned to the SLD and completed the 105 miles on the parkway at 5:10. Beautiful drive, but we both agree that the Blue Ridge Parkway is prettier. Crossed into West Virginia at 6:55 at mile 964.1. Total miles thus far: 974.8. Today 179.3 See ya tomorrow, The OTRA Gang P.S. Judy: Molly is glad there is no gymnastics tonight. She did not want you to learn a back hand spring before her.
