|Had our hearts set on bicycle riding today on a bike path Rick Steves recommended but we had a challenge finding a bike rental shop. The first one we tried was not open today but a taxi guy told us of another one. There we rented 2 good bikes, 2 helmets, one basket and 1 lock. After practicing riding in a small park area, we boarded a tour boat at 10:15 to ride around two-thirds of Lake Annecy, getting off in the tiny town of Duindt. From there we rode the 7 miles back into town.
After getting off the boat at 11:40 we found a tiny bakery in Duindt where we bought and each ate a cheese sandwich with our water before starting out on the excellent (and busy!) bike path. It was a perfect day – sunny but not too hot as we were riding mostly in the sun. The mountain scenery (foothills of the French Alps) was magnificent; the various blues of the lake beautiful; the houses and flowers lovely! We stopped for photos or to rest several times along the way, thoroughly enjoying the leisurely pace. We returned the bikes and equipment 4 ½ hours later feeling we'd really shared a trip highlight.
About 7:00 we enjoyed a quiet dinner upstairs in a very old building, following the French tradition of a long leisurely meal: good salad, sausages and potatoes, wine, and ice cream for dessert. What a wonderful day!
