The entrance room. Still impressive ceilings

Today Mike, Yve, Pete and I went for a drive into the Tuscan hills north of the city. Jennie stayed to do more exploring, and to revisit her favourite leather shop!

The aim was to visit some of the villas dating form the time of the rich silk merchants of Lucca. There were 5 on the list.

WE saw two, having a guided tour of the second. In both places the family still lives there, so we could see just the ground floor. Because the second one has stayed in the family over the centuries the furniture was all original. Including the 'honeymoon' bed. A curious feature of one of the bedrooms in the second Villa, was that there were two large portraits of each of the mothers, or to put it another way, both mother in laws, of the last couple to use the room.THese are not recent additions. THey were there at the time of the marraige.

(This is not the honeymoon one which was in villa Torrigian. Perhaps fortunately my camera ran out of charge so no more photos

We drove through lots of olive groves and vineyards and up and down very winding and narrow roads. It was a bit hairy sometimes. Not good for Mike's nerves!

Worth the trip.
