playa del carmen

Zoe and I spent almost a week in Playa del Carmen which is about an hours drive from Cancun. We stayed in a cabana again, this time very close to the clear Caribbean, and we got into a bit of a routine again - sleeping in, going out for breakfast, lazing on the beach all day, having a siesta in the afternoon, swimming in the hotel pool, then showering and going out for dinner and a dance.

We were shown around by some waiters we'd met at 'Carlos 'n' Charlie's' (a popular restaurant/bar). We visited bars like 'The Blue Parrot', 'El Pirate' and 'Captain Tutix', but my favourite place was 'Mambo Cafe' where there didn't seem to be any tourists (apart from Zoe and I, that is). We enjoyed Mexican music played by a live band, as well as some Spanish pop music, and we got to dance with some of the local guys. Of course, we had no idea where to put our feet but it didn't take long to pick some good moves up.

The beaches are truly beautiful in Playa. The Caribbean Sea is more amazing than I'd imagined - a clear, clear turquoise - and the sand is a bright white. The only thing that spoils this destination is the tourists. But there are many less-developed areas around if you want to get away from the buzz. Even Tulum, which is nearby, offers the same gorgeous beaches without all of the commerciality.
