Our decision was to leave Homer and find a camping spot between Hope and Whittier. We found a USFS campground past the Hope Highway toward Whittier. It had no hook-ups and was off the beaten path next to a creek. Campground is The Granite Creek Campground. It has 19 sites and probably only had 5 of them occupied. It's good to get away from the RV parks and feel the backwoods. We were concerned for bears and took precautions.
We unhooked the car and drove 14 miles to check out the town of Hope. It's located at the end of Hope Highway on Turnagain Arm. Population says 151. It is a failed gold rush town that persisted. It has a 1896 store/cafe, museum, library, art galleries, hiking trails and recreational gold miners. It a very picturesque small town.
