Kuala Besut is a sleepy fishing village and also serves as a transit point for the Perhentian Islands. We expected to have to wait for a ferry to take us across to our hotel on the larger of the two islands, but when we arrived, we found that small boats were taking passengers as soon as there were as many as 6 – 8 ready to leave.

We were given life vests to wear and there was a tarpaulin roof on the small aluminum boat, but it was hang on for dear life for the duration of the 30-minute ride. We probably should have been a little scared, but the ocean was relatively calm and it was a thrill-ride we won’t forget for some time to come. For the first time in a long while, we felt a little like adventure travellers.
