The last stop of the day ended up taking me on a different road than that loop but it was worth it! I needed to continue on 53 to I-40, go east for 17 miles, then go south on 117 for 25 miles or so. I got it done before sunset and saw the park at the best time of the day for the lighting. The only way to get from one side of the National Monument without going around it is to hike down into the lava bed and up the other side. It takes a real hiker to go down into a field full of sharp lava rocks where it will be hotter than at the edges!
