It was another beautiful day at the Balloon Fiesta. Again we were out on the launch field by 6:30 AM, saw a beautiful sunrise, and went to work getting “Annie” the Ladybug set-up to fly. Because of competitions occurring today our launch site was moved to the north end of the field. There was a very light breeze out of the south when we started inflating the envelope. Then just about the time we were inflated and ready to heat the air, the wind shifted 180° and was quite strong. That created a big problem and a mad scramble to get the entire balloon rotated 180° and up in the air.

The balloon next to us had a more severe problem. The reversed wind caused the envelope to go up out of control and the propane heater did some damage to the skirt of the envelope before the crew regained control. It was pretty tense and exciting for awhile.

Annie did have a very good flight and two of our Boomer members got to fly today. The pilot asked the people standing next to the basket who wanted to go after warning that the landing might be a little rough. Elena was standing right there and could have gone but decided to wait. Later the pilot landed very smoothly in an open area but had a lot of cactus. The ground crew had to walk the basket and balloon about a hundred yards to a dirt road so we could bring down the envelope and get it milked and packed without damaging it. "Milked" is when the air is released and squeezed out from the balloon.

By 10:30 we were back home and had a relaxing day. We both took a nap – these early mornings are getting to us!
