For some, the Van Gogh Museum quickly became a highlight, with many captivated by the self-portraits, the still-life work - including Irises and Sunflowers, and old boots - and the symbolic masterpieces that have made this master famous. The gift shop was almost as captivating for many.

The luxury of lying on the grass and enjoying the sunshine at Museumplein was all it took to reinvigorate - and the grown ups took advantage of the proximity of the Rijksmuseum to take a look at Rembrandts The Nightwatch. For some, the Heineken Brewery Experience beckoned strongest.

Then, to Anne Frank Huis - a very sobering experience - so marvellous to see THE diary, and to learn of the extent of Jewish persecution in Amsterdam during the Second World War.

We were able to explore the annexe and feel something of the restrictions and demands of being in hiding for such a long time - 25 months before the betrayal and eventual transportation to Auschwitz.

Then to Hard Rock Cafe Amsterdam for dinner - with some interesting entertainment from the staff and a delightful birthday celebration for Emily and Kirsten.
