Crean's and the Guys' adventure travel blog

A long day today as we left erg Chebbi and made our first stop at Erfoud to visit a cooperative of 65 families who create handicrafts of the region and share in the proceeds of any sale. Brian and i bought our one and only special Moroccan item- me a glorious bowl of yellow and silver work, and Brian a silver sword to add to his collection of bedouin and berber knives bought on our previous visit. A LOT of haggling to place but eventually everyopne was happy and off we went, our wallet much lighter. The afternoon saw us stop in Todra Gorge- it is so impressive with the closer ock walls threatening to crush to two hotels wedged into the edge of the gorge and river. There were far more tourists than in 2005- Morocco has certainly become the hot tourist destination- the King has funded a lot of developements to enable the country to reach 10 million visitors by 2010. Not sure if it will happen, but you can definitley see where money has been spent on roading , elkectricity and water in all villages and schooling for children, plus lots on construction. We drove on and entered the des Gorge- wow! Rich red cliffs and houses with the green of the oasis lining the bottom of the gorge- a magical place that no photo can capture. Our sto`p for the night was in a small but typical Moroccoan hotel beside a gurgling stream- cool mountain air gave a good nights´sleep to 4 weary travllers- 2 suffering from travllers´tummy. The souther narea is less expensive than the north- our desrt stop was 500 Dhs each while last night 24E each got us DBB. All of the places we have stayed at that Amid has chosen are very good- character, service and excellent value.
