War of 1812 Re-enactment

War of 1812 Re-enactment

The Battle of Sackets Harbor, like any other battle during the War of 1812, was totally useless. The US had a large ship building yard at Sackets Harbor and this was where our Navy was stationed. The British tried to capture the harbor. The British landed a little over a mile from the harbor and attacked. The first line of American defenders broke and retreated to the ship yard while the second line of defenders held. The sailors at the ship yard, seeing the retreating first line defenders, thought the British broke through so they burnt all the ships and supplies. The British couldn't break the second line of American defenders so they left. The Americans claimed victory because the British didn't capture the harbor but the British could also claim victory because the Americans destroyed their own ship yard, which was what the British wanted to do.
