Capitol Reef in the Guadalupe Mountains. It's the highest point in TX...

(Ron Writing) We had another very windy day but the wind was out of the west and since we were heading mostly east we faired well and got very good gas mileage. Sort of made up for yesterday.

We continued on I-10 from Deming, NM to El Paso, TX where we stopped at Costco for fuel. Then we headed east on US-180/62 to Guadalupe Mountains National Park. We arrived there late this afternoon and had just enough time to tour the visitors center and watch a slide show before they closed. Many years ago when we were traveling in our 1983 VW Vanagon camper we stayed here in the campground and did some hiking. Today it was raining and very windy so we decided to head northeast to Carlsbad, NM. We passed Carlsbad Caverns National Park which we also visited several years ago. We are spending the night at the Walmart Supercenter in Carlsbad, NM.

Yesterday we lost an hour when we crossed from AZ into NM. They are in the same time zone but AZ changes to daylight savings time. Today we lost another hour when we crossed from NM into TX. Then after driving through the northwest corner of TX we crossed back into NM and gained that hour back again! It’s a good thing our cell phone and GPS always know the correct time!
