John & Sandra Expedition to OZ,NZ, Fiji Thailand & Singapore travel blog

Aotearoa – The Land of The Long White Cloud. If ever there was a day to see exactly what that means – this was it. After a quick Starbucks (well, you have to don’t you !) we left Napier to head for Martinborough – the heart of the Wairarapa wine country.

The sky was absolutely clear blue – not a cloud in sight as we headed down state highway 2 which goes all the way down to Wellington. As the Ruahine and Tararura Mountain ranges appeared to our right (running down the centre of the bottom half of the North island) , both ranges were covered in a blanket of white cloud from one end to the other as if someone had come along and spread a meringue mixture right across the ranges . Not a cloud to be seen anywhere else - impossible to effectively capture on camera, but definitely the embodiment of “The Long White Cloud”.

In to Martinborough around mid afternoon, where the temperature was soaring to an unusual high of 35 degrees. The drive into the town is quite picturesque with flat farming land and vineyards surrounded by rolling hills.

It is a peaceful town and one we enjoyed before. We were staying at a motel on the edge of the village, but decided to treat ourselves to dinner at The Peppers Hotel – stunning food. Sandra had the snapper and I had the marinated beef – which also gave us the chance to try both red and white wine.

We wandered back to our hotel – about a 15 minute walk . The sound of crickets filled the air and the last vestiges of deep blue and orange in the sky with the moon and venus clearly visible and a few starts just starting to peak through.
