Day 7 – Friday 5 September – Sarah’s 6th birthday in London
After a great night’s sleep (although Sarah snores, grinds her teeth and wiggles – entertaining when her and I have to share a bed for 5 nights!) Sarah and I wake up at 4.30am – and discover BBC tv at this time of the day is not flash! The kids channel starts at 6am, so we were ok from then! After presents for Sarah’s birthday – a digital barbie camera, a Dora purse, a Leapster petpals game, and a Disney pencil case/pack (very sad that everything is branded!) – we caught the tube to the Tower of London. The Yeoman Warder’s tour was entertaining and the kids loved seeing the crown jewels, diamonds, torture implements! The armoury was fantastic with antique guns galore – and the kids went mad with their cameras! After several hours, we left, taking the compulsory photo of London Bridge on the way out. After lunch at Subway (our new lunch time haunt – it is cheap and healthy and doesn’t have fries) we headed for Marble Arch and the shopping began. We discovered Primark – a new ‘cheap and cheerful’ clothing department store – and stocked up on multi-packs of undies (7 for 2 pounds) and socks as washing is not so easy here as in HKong. We also got Sarah jeans, umbrellas and spray jackets for the boys – as the London weather continuously brings rain every day! I was keen to try ladies clothes but the changing room queues were huge and the kids did not have any patience so I’ll leave my shopping for another day. We then headed for Marks and Spencer where we discovered the food court and we had cake for Sarah’s birthday. She was happy with her cream sponge and hot chocolate! Sorry, no candles though.
Right next door to the food court was the children’s wear department where the boys discovered suits! We have a family wedding to go to in Scotland on 26 September and while they didn’t really need suits they were a reasonable price and we all thought they both looked very cool! Connor is now the proud owner of a grey pin-stripe and looks like a mini-me of Scott (who picked up a grey pin-stripe in HKong!) and Daniel has a very suave black number - He looks like Harry Potter!! They also picked belts and plan on ties from Italy (they bought shoes/shirts from home).
We headed back to the hotel and after a very ordinary and expensive dinner in the local pub we hit the sack!
