Looking down on Coromandel Town and offshore islands from the road over...

The Coromandel Peninsula is very scenic - mountainous interior, rugged coastline on the Pacific side and lots of small islands on the Hurakai Gulf side. The weather doesn't do us any favours (to be fair it's only the second or third grey day we've had in four weeks so we can't complain) but it's still pretty.

Coromandel town grew up in a gold rush in the mid 1800s but is now pretty sleepy. We spend the night at a camp ground right on the seashore in a place called Shelly Beach - which funnily enough has a very shelly beach, lots of oysters, mussels, scallops and smaller stuff.
