Royal Natal Amphitheatre at Sunset

Underberg Express picked us up at the Lodge and took us to PMB where we proceeded to hop vars shared taxi/minibuses til we reached 21 km N. of Berville at Amphitheater Travelers Lodge & BPers at the foot of Amphitheater betw Royal Natal NP & Cathedral Peak.

The countryside is cattle & dairy farms – travel on fast 2 laner & 4 lane tollway. More tree plantations, 100s of acres of corn & wheat, overhead pivot & gun sprinkler systems w/ towering mtns in distance. Hard not thinking of MT & equally hard to get mind around it being fall, leaves turning/falling, getting colder, and it’s JUNE!

We debated a lot as to how to get into Lesotho from here(the people at Amphitheater Lodge told us there was virtually no way – other than their trip!). Finally, we opted to go to Royal Natal NP where we went w/ guide, Nonkululeko(Freedom) Neme – a Zulu from a local village – to see bushman cave paintings…very good, she is only 2nd female guide in all our travels. Very worried about incr in violence in S.Africa causing tourists to stay away. She described much about plants & paintings…Protea, Silver Sugarbush. I went on a three hour hike to Sunday Falls(nice, 40’ drop not much water) & saw only a field mouse…Bon saw a Reed buck just a few meters from visitor’s center!!!
