Akaroa is at the end of Banks Peninsula - a mountainous outcrop south east of Christchurch which is the remnants of two volcanoes. Akaroa harbour is actually one of the former craters - although now it is just a long inlet to the sea. The peninsula was originally bought from the Moari by a Frenchman - who returned to France to raise a band of colonists but on his return he found that the Brits had claimed the whole of the New Zealand and his land rights were overturned. But the colonists stayed anyway and consequently the surrounding area has a mixture of French and English names.
The town is quite stylish (probably because of it's French connections) but the weather is rubbish - raining and low cloud so we don't see it at it's best.
