After a long day yesterday, we were finally able to have a slower start to the morning today. We grabbed some breakfast and were able to see the beginnings of some of the alfombras being created on the streets. Alfombras are large carpets of died sawdust that are displayed on the streets. It takes multiple hours for the Guatemalans to create these carpets of intricate designs. In the end, the processions walk across them and they are destroyed in a matter of minutes. It is exciting to watch many young people creating these designs. Their attention to detail and their devotion are quite amazing.
The rest of the day we are planning on watching some of the processions, the most magnificent being the ones that take place late tonight.
