Vietnam, Laos and Thailand in 2008...with the Olivetts travel blog

I left early Monday for Danang. I walked from Tony's almost to the bus station, which is on the outskirts of town. I was nearly there and a motorcycle guy talked me into letting him take me instead of riding the bus. I am really glad I did, as it was a scenic ride. It was about 45 minutes of riding the entire length of China Beach. I got a hotel room in Danang then went out looking for a bike to buy. After finding the perfect one, a 12- speed tourer, I couldn't make up my mind whether this was what I really wanted to do. I walked a block and found some laptop bags that would make perfect panniers -- and that clinched it. I went back to buy it and she was closed for a couple-hour siesta. She had quoted me 2 million Dong (about $130). When I went back the third time her son was there and sold it to me for 1,800,000. I was like a kid with a new toy: I couldn't bring myself to get off of it. The traffic in Danang is horrendous. It is very thick with mostly motorcycles and bikes, and the intersections are free-for-alls. Even so, after the initial 10 minute hurdle it became quite enjoyable. I rode well into the dark, and I didn't quit until the third near miss.
