Our trip to Lake Atitlan was my first time to see the southern Guatemalan countryside, as well as to witness the madness of chicken bus travel (we were not on one, but they were passing us in all directions). Arriving at Lake Atitlan and traveling across the lake to the small community of San Marcos was also an opportunity to begin seeing that that even the most bohemian gringo-infested of Guatemalan places still has a local authenticness and beauty worth experiencing.
