Tai O Fishing Village

Tai O Fish Market

The transfer back to the airport went fine and we were still too early to check in. It was our day for getting the trainee check in clerks and even though we had no bags to check in it still took a while to sort out the seats and get checked in.

We found the water bottle holders we had been looking for and bought those while waiting for the flight.

It was a 7.30 hours flight which seemed very long and we only got a couple of hours sleep although compared to the final flight it was quite short.

Arriving in Hong Kong it was a very quick clearance through immigration and customs and the airport gave the appearance of being almost empty although of course it wasn't. It is a newer airport on reclaimed land off Lantau Island and we were amazed at all the new development and hundreds of residential skyscrapers everywhere. A bit different to Ayers Rock or Alice Springs!!

In the afternoon we went on a tour of Lantau island and took the Ngong Ping cable car which is 5.7km in length and has only been opened a few months. We got some great panoramic views of the new airport and surrounding district. This took us to Ngong Ping village where all the buildings are designed as a tradittional chinese architecture.

From here the tour took us up to the world's tallest outdoor seated Sakyamuni Buddha statue and the Po Lin Monastery. We then went across the island to Tai O fishing village and were taken on a walking tour of the fish market which was very pungent!! Many of the fishermen's houses are on stilts and the government is trying to relocate them.

The tour concluded with a ferry crossing back to Hong Kong Island and in the evening we watched the light show on the buildings from our room.

The hotel upgraded us to a suite and we were able to get straight into our room even though it was still only about 9am
