walls of Aigues Mortes at night

One of the gateways into the town

Decided to avoid Montpelier on the way to our friends place near avignon and take the coastal road up into the carmargue. Threading our way along the edges of the lakes, often between a lake and the sea we saw wild horses, herds of the local black cattle and small flocks of pink Flamingoes on some of the lakes. it seems some hardy souls among them choose to stay in france for the winter rather than migrate to north africa.

Spent the night camped alongside the walls of the town of Aigues Mortes, this town was an important port in the 13th centuary but the lake to the south has gradually silted up so it now stands on a canal. The lake area to the south is now a major production area for salt, white hills of it can be seen from the city walls.
