some of the troops at Louisbourg

Louisbourg children

We loved this reconstructed French fortress. Canada created this in a make-work program in the 1960's when many mines closed. Out of work miners learned new trades as they constructed buildings and furnishings on the ruins of a fort from the 1700's. About 150 employees now recreate the atmosphere in costume and acting the parts of the village inhabitants. A cute young guy, acting the part of the assistant financial manager answered my question about how he got his nice job with "Why by sucking up madame, just as you do in your age!" Nearly a whole day is needed here to enjoy it all, including the pea soup, bread pudding and hot buttered rum in a period restaurant, served at long tables, sitting with and meeting new people "on holiday" as we are.
