My tip is to allow plenty of time to research travel options to Antarctica and book early - at least a year ahead. I researched through the internet, tried to find people who had been to talk to, and also went to a few Information Nights run by different cruise companies in Melbourne. Things I took into account in my decision included: length of trip; where it departed from, visited along the way and returned to; cost and what was included; and the fact I wanted to travel in relative comfort; the food!; reputation of cruise organisation; tour leaders and other experts travelling with the cruise.
I have done a bit of pre-reading. My favourite books are:
"Two Below Zero: A Year Alone in Antarctica" (Don and Margie McIntyre)**Don and Margie are the Tour Leaders on the trip I have chosen.
Douglas Mawson: The Life of an Explorer (Lincoln Hall)
"Shackleton" (Roland Huntford)
"Antarctica & Back in Sixty Days" (Tim Bowden).
By May I was sent a clothing list. This has been good as I have been able to buy things throughout the year when I see them on special.
