On the canal

28 May 2007

We went through the Suez to Ismailia yesterday. A pilot boarded Jennifer and he was on board for the entire trip. See photo of Pilot who chained smoke through the entire trip which was about six and a half hours! For the big ships the canal is a one way street and there are passing lanes so to speak at points on the canal and the ships go through in convoy but for us it was no problem.

At several points along the canal are pontoon military bridges on the Egyptian side ready to be floated across to Sinai which although it is part or Egypt is the first line of defense with Israel. Also a swivel bridge that is on both sides. A one point we passed abandoned tanks from the 67' war when Israel took Sinai. There were also many army check points.

Arrived at the marina at Ismailia which was a wonderful change after Port Said. The only yachts there were cruising yachts. About 10 to 12 mainly coming up to the Med for the summer.
