I arrived at the Venus Beach Hotel at 8:30 pm on Friday night after 24 hours of flying. Bangkok-London-Paphos with a change of airports at London! When I checked in the staff mentioned a local dance group would be performing in the bar at 9:30. So I dumped my bags and went down-my current theory on jet lag is to be really tired! The dancing was fun to watch and in the course of the evening I met Val Mundy from London who was also here on her own and Andreas an 80 year old local character (you can see their portraits in the photo gallery) and the theory worked! NO JET LAG
Val has been a great companion.
The Cypriots I have met have been lovely and have a sense of humor.
So I have wandered around the port and seen ruins, had dinner at the port and listened to western music at Polie's Bar owned by a Cypriot musician and his wife. The place was packed with aging British couples who have retired to Cyprus. Val and I were escorted by Andreas who was trying to line me up to be wife number 4. I did not think it was such a good idea. His last wife the Bulgarian had spend too much of his money. Personally, Val and I thought no amount of money would have made it worth it!
After 3 nights at the Venus I moved to Leda Gardens. From five star to no star.
There are not many independent travelers in Cyprus. Mainly tour groups from Europe. You will see in the photo gallery a typical pose for the average tourist. Out in the sun in the middle of the day with deck chair turned to have maximum burning power. I have not seen so much sunburn in a very long while! Last time was in Hawaii with Americans from the mid west!
The ancient ruins of Kato Pafos are World Heritage listed. Dating back from the 2nd century AD. Wonderful mosaic floors of four Roman villas.
I also did a jeep safari into the interior. Beautiful scenery and the Kykkos Monastery.
Jennifer is sailing in today so till soon......
