CJ and Bexta take on the world 2004/05 travel blog

Stunning colonial architecture around the Joo Chiat area. How did we miss...

The tallest and oldest Indian temple in Singapore!

The colourful paintings and murals that line the inside of the temple!

Well me and Bexta parted company for 10 days, she went back to Krabi to do some teaching whilst I stuck to our original itinery and carried onto Bali, stopping off for one night in Singapore. This was my second trip to Singapore as this had been our first port of call when we started this trip 8 weeks ago, and what a pleasant overnight stay it was.

I checked into a youth hostel in the Joo Chiat area, an area that we hadn't explored last time. Was a bit worried at first when the taxi driver dropped me off outside a nightclub and said that it was the right address for the hostel, then I noticed the sign for it. Although sighted above a nightclub, it was actually a lovely hostel, and was run by some very friendly people. Would definitely recommend it to anyone - the Betel Box Hostel!

The Joo Chiat area I suppose is a bit like Chinatown in terms of its little windy streets, but a lot less tidier, cleaner and quieter. Tony, one of the guys that ran the hostel gave me directions for a walk to explore the area when I had a few hours to kill before my flight. The walk took me past some stunning architecture that has an eclectic mix of traditional local architecture mixed in with some Western influences, a very colourful sight!!

I also stopped off and had a look around one of Singapore's oldest and tallest Indian temples which also had some very colourful work going on inside on the walls and ceilings, it was beautiful.

All in all a very pleasant stay in Singapore again!
