Trout On the Ferry

That's Not Art!

Looking Towards Surfer's Paradise From Mermaid Beach

It's been a whirlwind of activity since we left Port Douglas 4 days ago.

The kids and I flew down to Brisbane on Saturday after spending just two days in Cairns. We checked into a hotel near South Bank late Saturday night, and spent Sunday walking around town. There was a great little outdoor market going on near Eagle Street Pier that we visited in the morning, and after lunch we rode the City Cat ferry over to the museum. The kids really enjoyed most of the exhibits at the museum, but Trout was once again mystified by the modern art. "That's not art!"

This morning we caught the train down to the Gold Coast and checked into the Montana Palms Apartments at Mermaid Beach ($63 usd). We have a nice apartment here with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a kitchen (we actually have an oven and a dishwasher... first ones in 6 months!). We're also just one block off the beach, which is great.

For those of you who don't know, Australia's Gold Coast is a little like Orlando, Florida. There are huge theme parks here including WB Movie World, SeaWorld, and DreamWorld. There are also several big water parks, a wildlife sanctuary, and about a million other places to spend $$$. The towns along the beach are lined with high rise hotels and resorts, and restaurants are everywhere.

Guess what we're here to do?

The kids have narrowed it down to two parks they want to visit, and yesterday I purchased a 3 day pass that will let us hop between them. We're going to break up our three days with a few rest / schoolwork days, and maybe even spend some time at the beach. Right now I'm only planning to be here for one week, but we'll see what happens.
