Vientiane must be the smallest capital city in the world. It has a population of just over 200,000 and can easily be walked around in a few hours. After breakfast this morning we headed off down the major road which is called the Champs Elysees of the east at the end of which is the Victory Monument which looks very similar to the Arc De Triomphe. We followed the guidebook along past some other sites, the morning market where everything from TV's, fabrics and sewing machines were on sale. At one end of the market are goldsmiths who work with the gold with fiery gas burners. We also saw one of Vientianes oldest Buddhist stupa and the Presential Palace. We had lunch at the Riverside restaurant but decided against the fried cricket on the menu. Tomorrow we take the bus to Savannaket where I'll continue to Pakse the next day but Pa and Corinna will cross into Vietnam.
