LAUNCESTON \ ROSS - Thursday 14th December (Day 48)

With Jetstar conspiring to rob us of a day in Launceston and getting us there even later the previous evening, 10pm, we hit the pillow at the lovely heritage 'Old Bakery Inn' hotel with even the sound of growling V8 engines and screaching tyres failing to keep us awake.

We awoke to find Launceston in a smoke haze from the still burning huge bush fires on the east coast, our destination later in the day!

Anyway with now only a morning to see Launceston, after picking up the hire car, we headed straight for the beautiful Cataract Gorge, a 15 minute stroll from the centre of town.

We then hit the road, Highway 1, which follows more or less the old coaching road between Launceston and Hobart. Apparently the English trees and hedgerows (not surprsing the hayfever started) give the Tassie midlands through which we travelled an English countryside appearance. However we saw nothing but straw yellow fields with accompanying smoke haze, no wonder those fires were still raging! We stopped at the old garrison town of Ross and viewed the famous convict built bridge, before heading towards the east coast and Coles Bay for a 2 night stop.
