CAIRNS\KURANDA - Monday 27th November to Tuesday 28th (Days 31 & 32)

After arriving back in Cairns the previous evening we set off for a day trip to Kuranda in the Atherton Tablelands. This involved taking the scenic railway in the morning. Gill had decided that she wanted to travel 'Gold' class on the train, and to our slight embarrassment (and delight!) we found ourselves on a packed train in our own carriage!! We had a hostess serving very nice canapes and drinks - this really is the only way to travel (see photo). The journey was fantastic, the views stunning, as the train wound its way up Baron Gorge (see more photos). Kuranda itself is full of arts and crafts shops in a rainforest setting. Return to Cairns was by Skyrail, a 7km long gondala ride above the forest canopy. Those of you who know Gill know that she's not exactly great in confined spaces and with heights. Boy oh boy was this high!!! I thought at one point that I may have to take the appropriate emergency action for someone panicing - a short sharpe slap across the chops. But despite cries of 'stop moving around' and 'are we still high up?' (yes!), Gill maintained her composure, just.

The next day, Tuesday, we set off for the long journey south to Brisbane, taking a 2 hour bus journey to Mission Beach.
