|We stopped in on the quiet town of Cherating on the east coast. There are a few scattered resorts along this coast line but it is more or less scattered with small fishing towns. Cherating used to be a very popular stop for backpackers due to its laid back atmosphere and friendly people. Although the town still has those qualities, for some reason it is not often visited, in fact it seemed like a ghost town with most of the small chalets and restaurants empty.
It was so nice and quite with great food that we ended up staying for four days. We rented some bikes and went up the coast a ways to see a turtle rehabilitation centre (that was closed) and stopped in on the Club Med beach that was completely empty. Dad took a kayak up the small narrow river behind our chalet for a few hours one day. He said it was one of the high lights of the trip so far with calm waters reflecting the thick mangrove forest under the blue sky. Peaceful with only the jungle that gradually got more dense further up the river with gigantic palms growing up form the banks of the river, he saw colourful birds, a large white eagle (with an enormous wing span) and lots of jumping fish along the ways. He even saw a cobra crossing the river and go up the bank in front of the kayak.
Other than that we simple enjoyed the chilled out atmosphere and great food, oh yah, and some football games at 2:00 am.
