After spending 3 weeks driving up the east coast, we boarded a plane and headed back to Sydney. We can't believe how fast the time has gone by! I guess it really is true that time flies when you're having fun!
We arrived just in time to celebrate Australia Day (Jan. 26) with our friends the Merrell's. Their home is just steps away from one of the many bays that connect to Sydney Harbour so we jumped on the ferry and cruised across to the downtown Sydney side of the Harbor. We had a great picnic lunch right in the center of the action near the famous Sydney Opera House and the downtown Harbour Bridge. It was great! There were thousands of people enjoying the many festivities being held and watching all the decorated boats float by under the bridge. It was just like celebrating the 4th of July only without any American flags.
We spent our last few days touring around Sydney. One of my favorite places was Bondi Beach. It brought back memories of San Sebastian Spain, which was also one of my favorites. The beach is tucked into a beautiful picturesque bay with really clear blue water and tons of sun worshipers! It had a great international feel to it. The town is filled with charming cafes, restaurants, eclectic bookshops and enough shops for a girl to get her self into trouble! I had to remind myself that my suitcase already won't shut without me sitting on it! (I managed to find a spot)
After realizing that we had only seen the coast of Australia we ventured inland to the Blue Mountains. The "Grand Canyon" of Australia, which is also a World Heritage site has steep cliffs, deep gorges and beautiful lookouts. It was a nice contrast to the coastal areas that we have explored.
As you can tell, we love Australia! It is such a wonderful country with so much to offer for everyone. The beaches are gorgeous, the cities have so much character and the people have a great love of life. After nearly a month here, we have only just scratched the surface. We recommend it to everyone. We will definitely be coming back to the land down under!
