Bridge to Bridge

Karen Ignatowicz and David Liddell set off from the Tyne Bridge Newcastle, England on August 13th in a forty year old British sports car, a hired 1964 Triumph TR4 after 10 months driving overland we have reached our destination, its younger sister the Sydney Harbour Bridge. We returned home on June 13th.

Australia was our 26th country in ten months and 25,500miles. We have driven though Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, India and over the highest roads in the world in the Himalayas of Nepal and Tibet and though China before entering South East Asia at the Chinese-Laos border. Next we drove though Thailand, Malaysia and shipped the car from Singapore to Indonesia where we island hopped to East Timor and shipped the car to Darwin. In Australia we took the Stuart Highway to Adelaide with a detour on gravel roads to Glen Helen, Kings Canyon and Ayers Rock. It was then we found Australia's jewel, visiting the vineyards while we meandered towards Sydney via Melbourne and Canberra.

We have had many adventures including getting completely lost in Istanbul (where we were rescued by a kind local driver), ambushed by Maoists in Nepal, visiting Everest base camp, nearly being arrested in Indonesia and breaking the suspension on 6 occasions!

We are raising money for SOS Children's Villages who give orphaned and abandoned children a family, a home and a future. They have villages in many of the counties we have passed though, many of which we have visited and have been most impressed with their work See www.sos-uk .org.uk . The recent Tsunami has orphaned many children and SOS is heavily involved with helping those who were affected.
