Exploring the South and beyond

Stephen travel blog
Welcome to my trip journal!
Walkabout: 1.(courtesy of Crocodile Dundee) A spontaneous journey through the wilderness of one's choosing in an effort to satisfy one's itchy feet, a need to be elsewhere, the craving for the open road, that space over the horizon...yes...something like that...you can't quite touch it so you have to go find it because you just know it's there.
2. A trek which has little or no goal other than admiring nature, and the personal satisfaction of walking around the middle of nowhere and making it home alive.

Exploration: the action of traveling in or through an unfamiliar area in order to learn about it.

So take your pick! I prefer a combination of "walkabout" and "exploration", as I suppose I have a bit of an itchy foot on occasion, as well as a need to explore. And yes, there may still be a hint of "post-loss" syndrome going on in my head, for which I simply need to take an inward journey at a pivotal time in my life. Whatever you want to call it, and whatever the reason, the time has come to put the rubber to the pavement and hit the road again. I also have to admit there is some trepidation in leaving new-found friends, but alas, one cannot grow and move forward without taking the journey.
The primary adventure will be exploring some of the natural areas of the southwest - Death Valley, Joshua Tree, Anza-Borrego Desert, various canyonlands and ancient artifacts in Arizona and Utah, and maybe even the Quartzite phenomenon. Certainly there are numerous possibilities, and some that I don't even know about yet. My relatively new interests in hiking, bicycling and kayaking will hopefully be playing a major role in this journey as well.
So buckle up, hold on to your hat, take a deep breath, and join me on this adventure into the unknown.
