North To Alaska - The Call Of The Wild

Beau and Cheryl travel blog
Hello, we are Beau and Cheryl from Wisconsin. To celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary, we are taking an 8 week RV trip from Wisconsin, thru Canada, and on to Alaska. The purpose of this journal is to provide our friends and family a way to follow our travels, and keep up to date with our activities.

In 1973 a couple of high school classmates used the machine shop at school to outfit an old station wagon with an auxiliary fuel tank, skid plates, radiator, headlight and windshield guards with the goal of driving on the Alaska Highway. The road was quite a bit more rugged then. I was invited along but did not accept the invitation. I have no idea if they ever went or made it. They graduated a year ahead of me and I lost track of them. I have been thinking about that trip ever since.

Since then, college and mechanical engineering and nursing degrees , Cheryl and I married, work, built 2 houses, work, raised sons Matthew and Ryan, work, sent both boys to college, work, and all of a sudden the house was quiet. Where did 30 years go? OK! Time for Cheryl and I to play!

We decided to do it big and take an extended vacation. Where? Yellowstone? Cruise? Europe? All this time, thoughts of my long forgotten classmates and driving the Alaska Highway kept coming back and stayed at the top of the list. Alaska and "The Call Of The Wild". Decision made – we agreed that we would take an 8 week RV trip to Alaska.

We visited local RV dealers and a couple shows. We read others on line trip journals,, and Escapees. This started the 2 year process of planning and preparing. We liked the rear living floor plans from Jayco. In 2007 we visited the Jayco factory in Elkhart Indiana and decided that a Jayco 29.5 RLS fifth wheel trailer would fill our needs. After months of on-line research of trucks and trailers, in early 2008 we purchased a 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 diesel dually as our tow vehicle, and ordered our trailer. We took delivery of the trailer on our 29th anniversary May 19, 2008 in Des Moines, Iowa.

During the summer of 2008 we took several trips within Wisconsin to “practice” RV-ing. After each trip, we made lists of what we had forgotton to bring along, we made modifications to the truck and trailer to make it suit our preferences, added accessories, and learned how to use the appliances and features of the Jayco.

We gave notice at our jobs that we will take 8 weeks vacation beginning July 18, 2009.

The last stanza from the poem “The Call Of Wild” by Robert W. Service has become our guide:

But can't you hear the Wild? -- it's calling you.
Let us probe the silent places, let us seek what luck betide us;
Let us journey to a lonely land I know.
There's a whisper on the night-wind, there's a star agleam to guide us,
And the Wild is calling, calling. . .let us go.

We are ready to go!
