Mexico & Central America by Motorcycle 2008/09

Exploring Mexico and Central America's backroads by motorcycle is the next leg of our ongoing journey.

During 2007 we traveled over 40,000 km by motorcycle exploring North American backroads from the Arctic Ocean in Alaska to the North Atlantic in Newfoundland & Labrador and finally to the Sea of Cortez in Mexico.

As we continued our adventure by traveling into Mexico in early January 2008 we hit a bit of a snag. In Baja Mexico Sur a minor fall resulted in a broken leg for me and a lengthy delay in our overall plans.

We were forced to return home for my surgery and by the time I healed enough to ride again it was much too hot to return to Mexico.

Despite this little setback, it has been an amazing journey for us so far! Even our little misadventure in Mexico in January 2008 provided a once in a lifetime experience. (Once is enough though.)

The plan is very simple this time. 1) Get on the motorcycle and head south at the end of September, before it gets too cold. 2) Explore as much of Mexico and Central America as we can. 3) Return in the spring, once it has warmed up again.

Our delay since January has provided ample time for research. We have some defined points of interest in mind, but no set routes or time table. Although the main tourist attractions are certainly of interest, our primary goal is learning more about the people and cultures of Mexico and Central America.

In our experience, this only happens when you truly get off the beaten path, away from the tourist facade. Our spanish is very limited right now but it is getting better. Total emersion should speed up the learning curve considerably.

We plan on exploring Mexico extensively and dipping into Belize & Guatemala. We have also made the necessary preparations to explore further south into El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama once we are "in the neighborhood" if it strikes our fancy.

The total trip is expected to take 6 or 7 months. We would be honoured to have you ride along with us through our trip journal.
