Ron & Elena's 2007-2010 Travels travel blog

(Ron Writing) We relaxed in our beautiful campsite until after lunch (checkout time was 2 PM) and then drove back to Amarillo, TX. Before we left a beautiful painted bunting came and sat on the bush right outside our dining room window. This is the first one we’ve ever seen. By the time I could get the camera fired-up he was gone. It's a beutiful bird.

There is a Sam’s Club in Amarillo right along I-40 so we stopped to do some shopping. It’s been a long time since we’ve been to a Sam’s Club – in fact our membership expired about 3 months ago. Elena found some groceries she likes to purchase at Sam’s and I renewed our membership and looked around the store. This Sam’s allows RVers to park overnight so we decided to spend the night here.

Since it’s Cinco de Mayo we were in the mood for Mexican food. By chance Elena found a 2 for 1 restaurant coupon in a travel flyer we picked up somewhere and by extreme coincidence one of the restaurant’s 2 locations in Amarillo is right across the street from Sam’s! It must be our lucky day. In CA it seemed like there were always restaurants sending us these coupons and we used them very frequently. But, now that we’re traveling this is the first time we’ve gotten a free dinner.

The menu at La Fiesta Grande includes some items we’d never seen in Mexican restaurants in CA or other places. Check out the “menus”, “Specialties menu”. I tried the Barbacoa Dinner but was not quite adventurous enough to try one of the Lengua items. Barbacoa, in this case was a steamed smoked shredded brisket and was very good. Lengua is beef tongue. Elena had a chicken enchilada plate which was excellent. We could only eat about half of our dinners but saved room for a Sopapilla which we shared. It was not as light and tasty as the ones we enjoyed at Anita’s in Fullerton, CA.
