Our day yesterday started out with a drive to Gator Country just west of Beaumont...to say we were disappointed is an understatement! Reported to have one of the largest gators in captivity named "Al" who is over 13 feet long, the village is only open on weekends during the winter (which wasn't in the literature) so we didn't get in. There were a few gators and snapping turtles by the entrance so we did get to see some of them up close and personal through the fence, deciding that was as close as we wanted to get to either of them! From there we drove into downtown Beaumont where we visited one of the most beautiful houses of worship in the southwest. It is called the Saint Anthony Cathedral Basilica and the most breathtaking place we have ever been in. While it is a Catholic cathedral, all faiths are welcome. The woodwork, mosaics, frescos, stained glass and metal work is some of the most amazing workmanship in the country and was done by master European artisans. In 2006 Pope Benedict XVI elevated the church to a rare and honored tile of "Cathedral Basilica." It was built over 100 years ago and while it has undergone many changes during that time, much of it remains the same as it was when it was built. A portion of it was damaged by Hurricane IKE and has been all redone. You can see many interior shots at http://family.webshots.com/album/548566548lRukjF. To say our day ended on a high would also be an understatement! We also drove by the fire hydrant that was used in the movie "101 Dalmatians." HUGE!
