Port Said, the Suez to Ismailia 26 May 2007
Sailed over night from Ashkalom, Israel to Port Said, Egypt. This is where the boat gets measured to go through the Suez and we get our visas for Egypt and the Sudan. We were hoping we could get all that done and go through the first half of the canal today but no luck.. That would have been good as the "Yacht Club" at Port Said leaves a little to be desired! See photo.
We had to spend the night at the Port Said Yacht Club. Terrible location on the main channel with bad swell and mosquitos. Snadwiched between the giant cranes. Walked into town and saw only two other women without head gear.
About the Suez
The overall length is 190km. First we are going to Ismailia which is 78km and staying there to go into Cairo and the pyramids. Then we will continue. The boats go through in convoy. The canal started to be built in 1859.
