About an hour south along the coast lies Huanchaco. Huanchaco is small beach town with a relaxed feel to it. After spending a couple of days in no man's land Chicama, Huanchaco seemed to have it all! Great restaurants with some excellent seafood, comfortable hotels, an internet on every corner and most importantly great surf right in front of our hotel. The town is a popular summer spot for the local Peruvians that live in the nearby city of Trujillo. This is also rumored to be where the world's first surfers came from, riding waves over 2000 years ago! There were hundreds of people arriving by the bus loads over the weekend. Fortunately, the locals are really friendly and pretty mellow. We had a great time surfing and hanging out around the town. In between surf sessions we went for a cultural experience to the nearby ruins of Chan Chan. Chan Chan is citadel of mud brick built between the 12th and 15th centuries. It is said to have held 60 thousand inhabitants and stretched over an area of 12 square miles. Today, about 4 sq miles remain but were pretty impressive.

We've had a fun time here in Huanchaco. The weather has been great and we've had some fun surf. We are looking forward to our next stop which will take us all the way back to 1300ad! We can hardly wait!
