Johannas had arranged/paid for taxi to pick us up to go to the airport so about 7:30, driver pulled up & off we went, wouldn't even pick up 2 others needing a ride as well...all arranged I guess. Short wait & hardly any security ck we were in the air. Tan/brown rugged landscape kind of SW US canyonland, very few trees, lots of rect/sq patchwork of wheat/grain fields most brown already harvested(dry season began in Oct).
Landing at airport(all the airports we have seen in Ethiopia are no more than 5-6 years old-nice) with planeload of haolis, this is a first experience when the baggage receiving is in the same room opposite lines of tables each representing an O.N. option. We should have been forwarned by this, ha! Bon ckd prices etc at 2 Hotels, Chelsea & Heaven...half hour to town in taxi is set price, no room at Chelsea and we ended up in Heaven Guesthouse! Relatively new, in fact, the whole town seems to be getting a makeover for tourists. The church sites(11 in town) have major roof covers to protect them. Prices have doubled and you must pay $20 US whether you see one or all 11. Since we're here such a short time and don't feel like going via bush taxi to out of town church which would cost almost the same, we opt to walk around town tust to take in the scene. Definately becoming a tourist destination. Found English language used book store! Great find, scored here for books to last at least 2+ months(finished Dune series).
