We had often seen the Angel of the North as we had travelled the A1 north in the past. Today we actually visited the site. The Angel of the North is a steel sculpture of an angel designed by Antony Gormley. It stands 66ft tall with wings measuring 177ft across and stands on the site of a colliery pit head
The sculpture was completed in February 1998. Because of its position on the hill the sculpture was built to withstand winds of over 100 mph. Over 600 tonnes of concrete were used to create foundations which anchored the sculpture to the rock 70 feet below.
It is an amazing sculpture and everything seams dwarfed by its size.
