|Stopping at this roadside attraction is not something we ordinarily do but this was an intriguing spot and oh were we happy we did. Hole n' the rock is a unique 5000 sq foot home blasted totally inside a huge rock. It started as a small cave where cattlemen and homesteaders traveling the Santa Fe Trail to California would stop here because of the plentiful spring water and shade. The Christensen's homesteaded here and soon created the "world's most unique dining room." The 5000 sq ft home is blasted totally out of solid sandstone, taking 12 years to create, excavating 50,000 cubic feet of sandstone and has 3 huge pillars inside to support the structure. It has a kitchen, bathroom, 3 bedrooms, family dining room and huge living area. Mrs. Christensen built the bathroom by herself after he passed away. The fireplace chimney was chipped through approximately 65 feet of rock. The dining room in which they served food to the travelers has since been made into a gift shop. The home remains a pleasant 67-72 degrees year around. The southside of the home has lots of windows so is quite light in the daytime. Electric lights were added in the 60's. There is a huge collection of Lyle Nichols metal and art sculptures on the property which are amazing and very creative.
